Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) at metal surfaces has gained much attention since it can convert CO2 to value-added chemical fuels and feedstocks. In this presentation, I¡¯ll talk about our progess to realize an efficient CO2RR toward multi-carbon products using a gas diffusion electrode (GDE). While it is a general belief that tailoring intrinsic properties of catalysts is a key for active CO2RR toward multi-carbon products such as ethylene, I'll show that local CO2 environment near the catalysts is the knob that controls product selectivity in CO2RR using a model catalyst of mono-disperse Cu nanoparticles. I'll discuss 1) the reaction mechanisms of CO2RR on a Cu surface, 2) reaction parameters to control the reaction pathways, and 3) state-of-the art CO2RR systems acheived through the reaction parameter control.
