In big data era increasing requirement for new computing system to fulfill the imperative demand on information processing has driven the development of brain-inspired neuromorphic systems that can perform fast and energy efficient computing. CMOS-based neuromorphic hardware systems have been introduced, but they still have some issues, such as, device sizes and energy consumption. Emerging memory devices are considered as a good candidate that can mimic the biological synapses. In this presentation, recent developments in artificial synaptic devices for use in neuromorphic systems will be presented. The operation mechanism and emulation of synaptic plasticity by use of various materials and structures will be discussed in detail.
